The five phases of a UCAT preparation plan

The calendar changes, but the purpose of each phase should remain clear.

UCAT revision phases and their purpose
PhaseMain purposeMove on when
Diagnostic and familiarisationLearn the interface, tools and current question types; record a representative starting pointYou can identify the format and explain the main source of errors
AccuracyPractise methods without forcing full test paceThe method is repeatable and errors are understood
Timed sectionsIntroduce short timed sets, then representative subtestsPacing decisions can be reviewed rather than guessed
Mocks and reviewUse official practice tests selectively and turn results into targeted workEach test produces specific changes, not just another score
Final-week taperReduce novelty and volume while preserving dependable technique and sleepContinue only light, confidence-preserving work

How the emphasis changes

12 weeks remaining

Learn the interface and question types, build an error record and use untimed official question-bank sets. Add gentle timing only after the method is understood.

8 weeks remaining

Continue accuracy work while introducing short timed sets. Rotate all sections, give repeated weak evidence more attention and keep SJT exposure regular.

6 weeks remaining

Use timed section sets consistently and introduce official practice tests with protected review time. A mock without review is measurement, not improvement.

4 weeks remaining

Prioritise recurring error patterns, practise test tools under realistic conditions and use section mocks or full tests selectively. Preserve rest days so timed evidence remains representative.

2 weeks remaining

Reduce low-value breadth. Rehearse reliable approaches, review high-frequency errors, complete representative timed work early enough to recover and confirm test-day logistics.

The final 7 days

Reduce novelty and avoid chasing every weakness. Use short confidence-building sets, review existing notes and protect sleep.

The final 48 hours

Do not attempt a major strategy overhaul. Check identification, travel or online-testing requirements, complete only light familiarisation and prioritise recovery.

Advice for late starters

Do not compress a 12-week workload into four weeks. Complete the official tour and question tutorials first, identify the most repeated errors, use representative timed work selectively and protect review and sleep. If fewer than two weeks remain, use the focused last-minute guide rather than multiplying daily volume.
